How the day is marked
Many communities gather on the night before, the evening of Friday 13 August, for recitation and talks on the Prophet’s life. Practice differs: some communities do not observe the day, and in Shia tradition the date is 17 Rabi al-Awwal.
Why the date can differ by one day
An Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. The dates on this page come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated calendar published in Saudi Arabia, and the app uses the same calculation. Many mosques and national bodies announce Ramadan and the two Eids only after the crescent has been seen, locally or elsewhere, or follow a different calculation, so the date they announce can be one day earlier or later than the date here.
If your mosque or community announces a different date, follow that announcement.
