The Hijri year
The Hijri calendar counts years from the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah. Its twelve lunar months have 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year and every Islamic holiday comes about eleven days earlier each year.
Ten days after the new year is Ashura: Ashura 2027.
Why the date can differ by one day
An Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. The dates on this page come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated calendar published in Saudi Arabia, and the app uses the same calculation. Many mosques and national bodies announce Ramadan and the two Eids only after the crescent has been seen, locally or elsewhere, or follow a different calculation, so the date they announce can be one day earlier or later than the date here.
If your mosque or community announces a different date, follow that announcement.
