Fasting on Ashura
The Prophet fasted on the tenth of Muharram and encouraged fasting on it, and many Muslims add the day before or the day after. By this calculation that is Monday 14 June with Tuesday 15 June, or Tuesday 15 June with Wednesday 16 June.
For Shia Muslims, Ashura is the day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala.
Ten days earlier: Islamic New Year 2027.
Why the date can differ by one day
An Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. The dates on this page come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated calendar published in Saudi Arabia, and the app uses the same calculation. Many mosques and national bodies announce Ramadan and the two Eids only after the crescent has been seen, locally or elsewhere, or follow a different calculation, so the date they announce can be one day earlier or later than the date here.
If your mosque or community announces a different date, follow that announcement.
