How to read these dates

An Islamic day begins at sunset, so each holiday starts on the evening before the date in the table. Night observances, such as Laylat al-Qadr, are listed by the evening on which they begin. Each holiday has its own page with the Hijri date, the evening it begins and what changes from one community to another.

Why the date can differ by one day

An Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. The dates on this page come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated calendar published in Saudi Arabia, and the app uses the same calculation. Many mosques and national bodies announce Ramadan and the two Eids only after the crescent has been seen, locally or elsewhere, or follow a different calculation, so the date they announce can be one day earlier or later than the date here.

If your mosque or community announces a different date, follow that announcement.

The first Hijri month to begin in 2027 is Sha’ban 1448 and the last is Sha’ban 1449. Each lasts 29 or 30 days by the Umm al-Qura calculation.
