Prayer Times in the United Kingdom

How Sahaar calculates prayer times in the United Kingdom

Sahaar's preset for the United Kingdom is the Moonsighting Committee method with the Hanafi Asr measure. It was chosen by measurement, not by habit: on 25 August 2026 we compared the candidates against the London Unified timetable published by the East London Mosque. The Muslim World League angles with a midnight rule put Fajr 35 minutes early and Isha 50 minutes late; the Moonsighting Committee profile stayed within four minutes on all six times.

Fajr and Isha here do not come from a fixed twilight angle. The Moonsighting Committee formula starts from 18° and adjusts it through the year for the city's latitude, so summer nights, when true astronomical twilight never ends in Britain, still yield a usable Fajr and Isha without a separate high-latitude substitution. From 55° north the formula switches to a fixed fraction instead: Fajr one-seventh of the night before sunrise and Isha one-seventh after sunset, all year. Among the cities below only Glasgow crosses that line, and its page says so.

Asr defaults to the Hanafi measure (2× shadow) because that is the column most congregations in London and Birmingham pray by. The standard measure (1× shadow) is printed beside it on every city page, so people who follow it are not left to guess. Your mosque may publish its own timetable; if it does, follow it.

Calculated — not an official timetable. Why prayer times differ between apps and timetables.

Cities

15 cities so far, chosen by the size of their Muslim communities rather than by population. On 1 October Fajr comes first in London (05:27) and last in Glasgow (05:44), 17 minutes apart; Glasgow is the northernmost at 55.9° north and London the southernmost at 51.5° north, so summer nights differ most between them.
